Fill Ya Heart…

with God’s Word…that you may not sin against Him!

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
Blessed are you, O LORD;
teach me your statutes!

-Psalm 119: 9-16 (English Standard Version)

Most of the time we hear people expressing how difficult it is to do what is right. So much emphasis is placed on the difficulty that it comes off sounding like it is impossible. Newsflash difficulty and impossibility are not synonymous! The truth is that most times we have difficulty doing what is right because we are surrounded by and immersed in things that continually fill our hearts with things other than God’s Word, things that may very well be permissible but not at all beneficial to have a successful walk with God.

In the above passage the psalmist reveals the secret to success in that walk with God. How can a young person keep their way straight? By living according to God’s Word, seeking God with all of their heart, trusting God to keep them from straying and hiding God’s Word within their heart so that they wont find themselves sinning against God.

Last post we told you to guard your heart, this post we are adding to that and saying that as you guard your heart from the wrong outside influences that you can also protect your heart from the inside by making sure that it is filled with God’s Word. Think of it like this, guarding your heart is like a firewall meant to block unwanted visitors and/or destructive viruses and such from gaining access; filling your heart with God’s Word is like an Anti-Virus program that seeks, searches out and destroys any foreign viruses or destructive programs that may have gained access.

What have you been filling your heart with? Do you find that it is hard to resist sin and walk upright before God? If so have you checked to see what things you allow to fill your heart? If you are continually filling your heart with things that contradict God’s Word or with things that encourage sin, then you will discover that your Christian walk will be more of a struggle than it has to be and your propensity to fail will be greater.

As a Christian odds are that you have the “desire” to do what is right, filling your heart with God’s Word will both intensify that desire, but it will also help you identify and isolate any impure things or thoughts that are designed to throw you off course.

Do yourself a favor today, schedule a check-up. Take some time and get away, allow God to help you do a heart check. Let Him reveal what kinds of things you have been letting fill your heart. It might be a bit embarrassing but do it anyway. I like the way my former pastor used to say it “break out your spot light and instead of shining on everyone else, turn it inward and say Lord look at all of this mess in here!”

Here’s a prayer to help get ya started:

Lord,

Thank you for giving us your Word to help us know you and to guide us. Search our hearts and thoughts and reveal to us those things that we have allowed in that are not from you and are not pleasing to you. Teach us how to desire your Word Like it is a most valuable treasure, and help us to remember to fill up our Hearts with your Word so that we might not be guilty of sinning against you. -Amen

Something to think about: The sooner we get our hearts together…the sooner we can really begin to live a life that is both pleasing to God and attractive to the viewer.
